About Fordingbridge

A seven arched medieval bridge which spans the river Avon guards the entrance to this historic market town. “The George”, a delightful pub where you can enjoy a cool pint watching the river and occasional brave soul throwing themselves off the bridge (into the water of course!) The town was recorded in the Domesday book of 1066 under the name Forde. Once an industrial & commercial town, Fordingbridge once boasted trades such as brick making, pottery and textiles. As with many historic places it also boasts a little bit of a rebel side through smuggling, the infamous Captain Diamond the “Smuggler King” who spent much of his time in a local tavern. Today the town has rediscovered itself so locals can proudly say they live here. A wonderful place for visitors to come and enjoy the beautiful scenery, nature havens, cycle ways and of course many great independent businesses.
